Wedding season is here and until March we can expect a lot of parties, gatherings, food and pictures. In this age of social media the weddings are almost designed specifically to create content for Facebook and Instagram. Naturally you want to look as good as possible in every photo. That means wearing nice clothes fixing your hair and smiling.

A nice smile is always appealing, but having a nice smile is not an easy thing nowadays. When we think about a beautiful smile, we usually think about clean white teeth, which are difficult to have considering that Pakistan currently has 50% to 70% prevalence of oral problems (caries, plaque, etc). This combined with the fact that there are 10 times fewer dentists than recommended. And that most citizens are not aware of the location of their nearest dental practice.

We are going to give you 5 dental procedures aimed to improve your dental aesthetics. If you want to have them all done, we recommend starting at least 10 to 12 months before the wedding day.

Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is the most popular procedure among those who want to obtain a beautiful white smile. But there are some things you’ll need to know before asking for this service. First of all, not all teeth can be whitened, yellow stained teeth are the most susceptible to this procedure. If your teeth are brown, black or any other color, then it will be difficult to remove that kind of stain with normal methods. The procedure basically involves applying some kind of Peroxide (we’ll simply call it bleach) on your teeth. There are 4 main ways to do it:

  1. With special toothpaste: Some special toothpastes have a higher concentration abrasive agents than normal formulas. These should be recommended by a dentist because the use of a very strong product can really harm your teeth.
  2. Direct application by the dentist: This method involves a single session (1 day of treatment) in which the dentist protects your gums with gel or other type or inert material. This is important because the next step is applying a strong bleaching agent directly on the surface of your teeth. This is the quickest treatment but this doesn’t mean that your teeth will be white instantly, it will take a few weeks until you see the real result.
  3. Whitening kit: Sometimes a dentist will recommend using a special kit that you can take home. You will need to perform a series of safe treatments for a certain period of time that can vary from days to weeks.
  4. Over-the-counter products: You can always buy different bleaching agents at the store. However, we strongly recommend you consulting your doctor before using any of these products.

If your the procedure you choose with your dentist goes to plan then in 4 to 6 weeks you should have a beautiful white smile.

Veneers/ Bondings

These are cosmetic alternatives meant to improve the shape of your teeth. Veneers are simple porcelain pieces placed over your teeth to make them look more straight, big or white. Bondings are little applications of filling on the teeth. You may choose between veneers or bondings. However, before that, a dentist should examine your teeth and gums to determine if they are healthy. If they are not, then that may compromise the stability of these materials in your mouth.

Veneers are permanent (they are fused to your teeth) and a bit more expensive, but are considered more beautiful and almost no one regrets having them, they can also be perfectly color-matched to your teeth is you want.

Bonding has some limitations, for example, they are not the best choice if you want to completely re-make your smile. They often don’t cover every single crack or discoloration if they are too extensive. However, this is a cheaper procedure and can be completed in a single session.

It will take you some time to get used to them (especially with veneers). During this time you may need or want some adjustments, so you should start the process 3 to 4 months in advance.

At the end of the process, your teeth should look much better (straighter, cleaner, whiter and with a better shape)

Straighteners

This is a big category. You can choose to use many different methods, but the fastest ones are frequently expensive or not available and the cheaper ones can take years to straighten your teeth. Normal braces are the more traditional option. However, since you probably are looking for the fastest and simplest option, we recommend a relatively new system called “Invisalign”. A set of dental trays and straighteners are used that do exactly the same as braces, with the added element that they are less painful and easier to install and remove. Also, they are less obvious. If you use them consistently, they´ll straighten your teeth in approximately 6 months. Giving you the best smile of your life by the time the wedding begins. Invisalign is a more expensive method than simple braces, it will be your choice which is best.

Crowns

This is the best option in case of broken or chipped teeth. They help you recover functionality and esthetics. Crowns are very similar to veneers, however, this is a more complete alternative. Veneers are paced in front of the teeth, but crowns are meant to cover the entire tooth. Also porcelain is the main component of so they are very resistant.

If you want, you can get different kinds of crown (metal, temporary, porcelain, etc), the decision is yours, but if what you want is a beautiful long-lasting smile, then we recommend permanent all-porcelain crowns. These last longer and look like real teeth but it will take you at least a couple of months getting used to them and for them to settle comfortably.

All resin crowns and temporary crowns are also good options, but they won’t last you long and with time you’ll have to go to your dentist to replace them.

Scaling

If you have a lot of build-up or gum disease, then this is the option for you. The procedure is very common but can be uncomfortable, so ask your dentist for some local anesthetic if you have sensitive gums. Scaling involves using either a handheld tool or an ultrasonic instrument to clean beneath your gums. This will remove any build-up, providing a deep cleaning.

If you choose to use this service, then you should know that your gums will feel particularly sensitive for a few days after the procedure, but overall this is the fastest method to clean your teeth if time is an issue.
